Unlike the Operation CanCon series, where music is part of the game, with The Summer Job (the first Break series gamebook) I used music as I did in Hikikomori: accompaniment while I wrote.
I listen to specific songs, albums, and artists, because I hope their moods will infuse my writing; if I want my stories to “feel” a certain way to the audience, then I listen to music which makes me feel similarly while I write.
For The Summer Job, set in Kyoto, I drew upon the music of various decades, music with which I was already familiar, whether originating from childhood friendships, later pop music, favourites from my own times in Japan, or more recent discoveries. Now I want to share that music with you.
Here is a selection of fifteen tracks which form an overview of the story, an ad hoc soundtrack which follows the progression of the main narrative. Whether you listen to it while reading, or while enjoying your own summertime, I hope you’ll discover something of interest here!
