If you’re a fan of the works which inspire my stories, and the playlists which appear in my books, you may notice at least one name is conspicuously absent: Henry Mancini.
Mancini’s influence cannot be understated. If all he’d ever recorded was the soundtrack to Peter Gunn, I’d still be able to fill a playlist with incredible heist music. The truth is, he gave us so much more, an abundance of great scores.
Right from the very beginning of the Break system’s development, I’ve been anxious to include his songs but, for various reasons, I’ve kept him waiting in the wings. In part, as an American, he seemed more appropriately tied to The Spring Break, set in Hawaii. Plus, he had recorded specifically Hawaiian (1966’s Music of Hawaii) and exotica-themed (1959’s Versatile / 1957’s Driftwood and Dreams) albums.
And while one of those albums is referenced within the story itself, the playlist which inspired me is taken from other works: a selection from his jazzy film and television scores. I hope you’ll find it a suitable blend to accompany a retro heist…
