Oddly enough, perhaps, this playlist was the first one I compiled, over a year and half ago, in late 2024. At that time, I was working on the original Break system project, watching a lot of heist films, and listening to a lot of crime jazz. It was a noir old time…

Since then, I’ve written several other books based on the same system, and I’ve (mostly) gone on a tour around the world (musically speaking). Recent playlists focused primarily on Japanese, Canadian, and Swiss artists, with a lesser focus on Hawaiian-themed music for The Summer Job, The Fall Affair, The Winter Mission, and The Spring Break, respectively.

In a full-circle moment, I recently released the first (and possibly final) book in the Break series, so now it’s time to share that original playlist. It’s comprised of a variety of artists, regardless of their country of affiliation, which is probably appropriate, given The Break System is a more abstracted game, taking place in the cityscape of your imagination.

Whether you play it in the background of your own Break session, or just while driving through a city at night, I hope you’ll enjoy this collection of inspirational jazz. Just don’t blame me if it inspires you to break a vault of your own…
